During a discussion on JioStar, de Villiers highlighted the importance of Sharma stepping up, stating, "At 25, he is no longer a teenager. This is the time for him to shoulder more responsibilities. With increased media scrutiny, there will be expectations for him to maintain consistency. His performance during the T20 World Cup was somewhat disappointing, despite a strong finish in the final. Overall, it was a quiet tournament for him, marked by inconsistency. Abhishek has scored over 400 runs in both of the last two IPL seasons, boasting a strike rate around 200. De Villiers praised Sharma's impressive performance in IPL 2025, where he averaged in the 30s and maintained a near 200 strike rate, but noted that there is room for improvement. Consistency is a personal challenge he must tackle mentally, especially as the top international T20I batter, which brings its own set of expectations and pressures. He needs to assess the threat level and decide whether to take a moment to regroup or to push forward. This aspect is still a gap in his game. Sometimes, bowlers will have the upper hand, and he must be smart and confident in his game plan. He has a proven blueprint that has worked for him, and he just needs to refine it, trust it, and adhere to it more than ever."
