De Villiers Discusses Kohli's Emotional Game

AB de Villiers recently shared an interesting anecdote about his long-time teammate Virat Kohli, revealing that he once suggested Kohli play a season without letting emotions take over. This conversation took place as they prepared for the IPL 2025 final against Punjab Kings.

De Villiers acknowledged Kohli's intense presence on the field, describing it as both a powerful asset and something he wished could be moderated.

“We have had this conversation many times before,” de Villiers remarked. “Why don't you try for a season and just get the emotion out of it, just to sort of relax a bit, ok? And I've told him before, and he said, it's not a bad idea, but it seems not to have worked out.”

Kohli, who has recently stepped back from Test cricket, is known for his animated style, often seen celebrating passionately, engaging in disputes with rivals, or motivating his teammates with fervor. De Villiers believes that this very passion is integral to Kohli's identity.

“He doesn't listen to me,” de Villiers added. “So the thing is, I think it's a natural thing for him. He can't help but show that he cares and that's where it comes from. So, at the end of the day, it is one of his strengths. He's come to where he is in his career and in his life because of the person that he is, the fact that he wears his heart on his sleeve.”

De Villiers Reflects on His Advice to Kohli

De Villiers, who enjoyed a legendary batting partnership with Kohli in the IPL, expressed how his perspective on Kohli's emotional play has evolved over time.

“I think I would like to see him as a more calm and composed player out there and I did speak to him about it, and I guess I was wrong,” he stated.

The bond between Kohli and de Villiers has remained strong, with de Villiers continuing to support Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) even after his retirement, frequently discussing the team and encouraging younger players.

This season, RCB has reached their fourth IPL final, where they will compete against PBKS for the championship. Kohli has been a key player for the team, showcasing a mix of fiery determination and seasoned experience during the playoffs.
