Aaron Rai and Akshay Bhatia Shine at Travelers Championship Opening Round
Rai and Bhatia Impress While Theegala Struggles
Aaron Rai continued his strong performance by entering the top 10 after the first round of the Travelers Championship. Meanwhile, Akshay Bhatia, another golfer of Indian descent, also started well as the PGA Tour's final Signature Event kicked off at TPC River Highlands.
Rai, who recently finished tied for 11th at the US Open, recorded an impressive five-under 65, placing him tied for eighth, just two strokes behind the leader, Eric Cole. Bhatia finished with a four-under 66, landing him in a tie for 14th place. In contrast, Sahith Theegala faced challenges, ending the round with a four-over 74, which put him tied for 70th.
Rai demonstrated remarkable consistency, not dropping a single shot throughout his round. He gained momentum with birdies on the second, seventh, and ninth holes, turning in three-under. He maintained his strong play on the back nine, adding birdies at the 13th and 15th to finish with a bogey-free 65. This performance continues Rai's excellent form following his PGA Championship win earlier this season and a solid showing at the US Open.
Bhatia's round was more dynamic. He began with a birdie but faced bogeys on the second and fourth holes before bouncing back. He made three consecutive birdies from the sixth to the eighth holes, finishing the front nine under par. On the back nine, he again made three straight birdies on the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes. A bogey on the 18th hole prevented an even better score, but his four-under 66 keeps him in the mix with three rounds left.
Theegala, who had his best major finish at the US Open, struggled to find his rhythm. Early bogeys on the third and fourth holes set him back, and a double bogey on the 11th made his task even tougher. Although he managed birdies on the 13th and 15th, another double bogey on the 17th resulted in a four-over 74. Given that TPC River Highlands typically allows for many birdies, Theegala will aim for a low score on Friday to get back into contention.
Eric Cole leads the tournament with a bogey-free seven-under 63, giving him a one-shot lead. The American is still in search of his first PGA Tour victory and came into this event with renewed confidence after finishing second at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He has unfinished business here, having had to withdraw last year due to illness despite being in contention.
Defending champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is tied for second after a flawless six-under 64. Scheffler had a humorous moment before the round when he forgot to wear a belt and borrowed one from fellow golfer Sam Burns. He is in good company, tied with Matt Fitzpatrick, Ben Griffin, Nico Echavarria, Kristoffer Reitan, and Bud Cauley.
With 14 players within two strokes of each other after the first day, the tournament is shaping up to be a competitive one. However, the spotlight early on has been on Rai and Bhatia, both of whom are well-positioned to contend for one of the PGA Tour's most significant prizes outside of the major championships.
