Aakash Chopra Reveals CSK's Lineup for IPL 2026 Season
Chopra's CSK Selection for IPL 2026
Aakash Chopra, the former Indian opener, has announced his predicted playing 12 for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League, shortly after the auction concluded. His choices have sparked discussions, particularly due to the inclusion of only two overseas players: Noor Ahmad and Dewald Brevis.
Leading the team is captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, paired with young talent Ayush Mhatre as the opening duo. Sanju Samson, a significant off-season acquisition through trade, is positioned at No. 3. The middle order is bolstered by wicketkeeper Kartik Sharma, who was signed for ₹14.20 crore, followed by Brevis and Shivam Dube.
Prashant Veer, a left-arm spinning all-rounder and another notable signing, is slotted in at No. 7. The legendary MS Dhoni remains part of the squad, taking the No. 8 spot. Chopra's lineup is rounded out with Noor Ahmad and Rahul Chahar as the spin options, alongside left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed. Chahar was CSK's third-highest purchase at ₹5.20 crore, following Sharma and Veer. Anshul Kamboj is designated as the Impact Substitute.
Aakash Chopra’s CSK Playing 12 For IPL 2026:
- Ruturaj Gaikwad
- Ayush Mhatre
- Sanju Samson
- Kartik Sharma
- Dewald Brevis
- Shivam Dube
- Prashant Veer
- MS Dhoni
- Noor Ahmad
- Rahul Chahar
- Khaleel Ahmed
- Impact Sub: Anshul Kamboj
This lineup showcases a mix of youthful energy and seasoned experience, with Dhoni's presence providing valuable leadership, even as his role diminishes. Chopra's decision to limit the number of overseas players reflects a strong belief in the domestic talent pool, especially the uncapped players who attracted high bids during the auction.
As one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, CSK enters the 2026 season facing significant expectations. The five-time champions have reached the playoffs in 14 out of 18 seasons but have struggled in recent years, missing the playoffs in four of the last six seasons, although they did secure two titles during that span.
The franchise faced consecutive playoff misses in 2024 and 2025, a first in their history. The 2025 season was particularly disappointing, as CSK finished at the bottom of the table for the first time ever.
With a moderately revamped squad, CSK aims to break the trend of playoff non-qualification. Ruturaj Gaikwad continues as captain for a third consecutive season, despite his previous two seasons ending without playoff advancement.
