Aaditya Thackeray, a member of the Shiv Sena (UBT), has voiced his discontent with the International Cricket Council (ICC) for designating Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium as the site for the 2026 T20 World Cup final, claiming it reflects a 'politics of favoritism.'
Thackeray Questions ICC's Decision
In a post shared on X, Thackeray expressed his bewilderment over the ICC's choice, pointing out that Mumbai's renowned Wankhede Stadium, which has historical significance including hosting the 2011 World Cup Final, was overlooked. He stated, 'Why is Ahmedabad favored for every final? Isn't Wankhede the ideal venue for a T20 World Cup final? Remember 2011?'
Concerns Over Political Influence
Thackeray further noted that the Ahmedabad stadium had previously hosted a World Cup final where India faced defeat against Australia in 2023. He urged the ICC to refrain from engaging in favoritism, suggesting that other venues like Eden Gardens in Kolkata and MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai are equally deserving of hosting the finals.

The Narendra Modi Stadium, recognized as the largest cricket venue globally, is set to host the final on March 8, as part of a tournament that will take place across eight exciting venues in India and Sri Lanka. The complete list of venues includes MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chennai), Arun Jaitley Stadium (New Delhi), Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai), Eden Gardens (Kolkata), R Premadasa Stadium (Colombo), Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground (Colombo), and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium (Kandy).

The full schedule for the tournament was revealed during a grand event in Mumbai, led by ICC Chairman Jay Shah.
