World Health Day: Experts Call for Science-Driven Health Awareness in Odisha

A Global Reminder on Health

Bhubaneswar: As Odisha commemorates World Health Day this Tuesday, it serves as a crucial reminder that health transcends mere absence of illness; it embodies complete physical, mental, and social well-being. The theme for this year, 'Together for Health, Stand with Science,' is particularly significant given the escalating health and mental health issues faced in the state and across India.

Lifestyle Diseases on the Rise

Urology and kidney transplant specialist Manas Ranjan Pradhan noted that modern lifestyles and poor habits are contributing to an increase in lifestyle-related diseases. He stated, "There is a growing awareness about health, leading more individuals to seek regular check-ups. Early detection through screenings is vital for effective treatment." He pointed out that kidney issues are rapidly increasing in Odisha, especially in areas like Dhenkanal.

Early Heart Problems Among Youth

Cardiologist Dibyaranjan Behera raised concerns about a troubling rise in early heart issues. He mentioned, "We are seeing heart attacks in younger patients, some as young as 25 to 35 years old. Contributing factors include smoking, stress, lack of sleep, sedentary lifestyles, and extended periods of working from home."

Improved Healthcare Access

JK Padhi, Director of Cardiology at Manipal Hospitals in Bhubaneswar, emphasized the advancements in healthcare accessibility. He remarked, "People today have better access to healthcare services compared to the past, thanks to various government initiatives and schemes."

The Importance of Mental Health Awareness

Health expert Amrit Pattojoshi stressed the necessity for an evidence-based approach to mental health care. He stated, "Recognizing that conditions like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and substance abuse are neurobiological and psychosocial issues is essential. They are not moral failings but conditions with established treatment options." He advocated for a comprehensive approach, stating, "Healthcare must not operate in isolation. We need collaboration among healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community members to shift Odisha’s health system from hospital-centric models to community outreach and preventive strategies." He also cautioned against misinformation, stating, "Unverified remedies and stigma can undermine scientific truths. Promoting mental health literacy is crucial for encouraging timely help and dispelling harmful myths." He highlighted that mental health in Odisha is increasingly impacted by academic pressures, urban isolation, social media, and financial stress, urging for scientific interventions that adapt to these evolving challenges.

Science's Role in Health Improvement

Subasish Behera, an Associate Professor at SCB Dental College and Hospital, pointed out the global impact of science on health outcomes. He remarked, "World Health Day serves as a reminder that scientific advancements in drugs, technology, and medical interventions have saved millions. It is imperative for everyone to prioritize health, share evidence-based information, and collaborate with governments, communities, and businesses to foster a healthier, greener world."

Conclusion: Normalizing Mental Health Discussions

On this World Health Day, experts are advocating for the normalization of mental health discussions, reinforcing evidence-based care, bridging treatment gaps, and combating misinformation with scientific accuracy.
