Snowfall in Lahaul-Spiti District

On the morning of May 6, 2025, the higher elevations of Lahaul-Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh were covered in fresh snowfall, while lower areas experienced intermittent rain, leading to a significant drop in temperatures even during May.


Cloudy conditions were reported across various parts of Kullu, contributing to the region's unusual weather. Despite the chill, there has been a notable increase in tourist arrivals, particularly from Manali, as visitors flock to experience the late spring snowfall. With much of the country facing summer heat, the cooler temperatures of Lahaul-Spiti have become a sought-after retreat.


Rising Tourist Numbers in Manali

Many tourists are choosing to travel through the Atal Tunnel into the Lahaul valley, where they explore its picturesque landscapes, with some extending their trips to Darcha, which has recently reopened to visitors.


This surge in tourism is revitalizing the local economy, with tourism operators noting an increase in hotel and homestay reservations. They anticipate a bustling tourism season following May 15.


Weather Forecast and Alerts

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, a strong western disturbance is set to impact the region from May 6 to 10, bringing widespread rainfall. An orange alert has been issued for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla on May 6 and 7, warning of gusty winds (40 to 50 km/h), lightning, and heavy rainfall.


A yellow alert is also in effect for other districts, including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Kinnaur, where adverse weather conditions are expected. However, skies are predicted to clear by May 8 in these areas.
