Odisha Power Utility Takes Action Against Unauthorized Constructions Near Electricity Lines

Public Safety Measures in Odisha
Berhampur: In a proactive move to enhance public safety, a power distribution company has issued 1,229 notices to various individuals and businesses for unauthorized constructions located near overhead electricity lines across eight southern districts in Odisha.
The notices were dispatched by TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL), a collaboration between Tata Power and the state government.
Ganjam received the highest number of notices, totaling 655, followed by Koraput with 160, Malkangiri with 131, Gajapati with 104, Nabarangpur with 83, Rayagada with 55, and Boudh with 38, according to an official statement.
The notices highlighted that these 'unauthorized' constructions present a 'serious threat to life and property' and obstruct routine maintenance and emergency restoration efforts.
This action aligns with the Electricity Act of 2003 and the CEA Safety Regulations of 2023, as stated by the utility.
According to the Act, no construction is allowed under or near overhead lines without prior approval, which could lead to power disconnection and legal repercussions.
Amit Kumar Garg, the CEO of TPSODL, emphasized, 'The safety of the public and our field teams is our highest priority. These encroachments are dangerous and illegal. We are dedicated to ensuring compliance while educating the public. We urge everyone to refrain from building near electrical lines and to obtain necessary permissions beforehand.'
Consumers who have received these notices are urged to take immediate action to resolve the issues, as failure to comply may result in enforcement actions as outlined in the Act.
