Nirmala Kumari has emerged as a beacon of resilience and skill in a field traditionally dominated by men. As an Assistant Lineman (ALM) with the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) in Chamba, she has shattered stereotypes and established new standards through her exemplary work.

Her responsibilities include climbing electric poles, fixing broken lines, and managing dangerous overhead wires, all of which require both physical strength and technical expertise. Currently stationed in the Hardaspura area of Chamba division, Nirmala prioritizes customer satisfaction, promptly addressing complaints to ensure a steady power supply.

Nirmala's journey began with a childhood dream to pursue an unconventional career. With unwavering support from her family, she sought technical education and chose a path that is rarely taken by women in rural and semi-urban India.

Dedication Beyond the Call of Duty

The electricity sector operates on a 24-hour basis, and Nirmala fulfills her duties across all shifts with remarkable dedication. She is also available for emergency calls, often responding to urgent situations at unconventional hours. Since joining in the 2018-19 batch, she has worked in various challenging locations, including Maredi, Sarol, and the remote tribal area of Pangi.

Her assignment in the snow-covered tribal region of Pangi is particularly noteworthy. The area is notorious for frequent power outages caused by heavy snowfall, difficult terrain, and severe weather conditions. While many shy away from such challenging environments, Nirmala has consistently restored power and garnered praise for her dedication and professionalism.

Nirmala's path to success was not without its challenges. When she began her training as an electrician at an ITI, she faced skepticism and ridicule from peers who doubted her abilities solely based on her gender.

Rather than succumbing to negativity, she found motivation in the encouragement of her teachers and her own resolve. Today, her achievements in the field serve as a powerful rebuttal to those who doubted her.
