Celebrating a Remarkable Achievement

Nalbari (Assam): Atanu Nath, an assistant professor from Assam, has been honored with the prestigious 'Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics 2026', often dubbed the 'Oscars of Science'.

Nath is one of 376 scientists recognized for their collaborative efforts on the Muon g-2 experiments, which took place at CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Fermilab, including 11 fellow Indian scientists.

As a physics lecturer at Tihu College in Nalbari, Nath expressed his joy over this significant recognition and encouraged young individuals to consider research careers instead of solely aiming for conventional professions.

In a statement to the media, he shared his pride in being among the recipients of such a distinguished award in the scientific community.

He noted that while many students in Assam aspire to become doctors or engineers, there is a pressing need for more to explore careers in science and research, which can also offer rewarding futures and meaningful contributions to society.

"Success comes with perseverance, and students must be prepared to put in the effort," Nath emphasized.

Originally from Hailakandi district, he completed his undergraduate studies at Gurucharan College (now a university) in Silchar.

He earned his master's degree from the SN Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata and pursued advanced studies at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai.

In 2013, Nath began his doctoral research at the University of Naples Federico II in Italy.

He obtained his PhD in 2016 and subsequently worked as a guest researcher at the Muon-2 laboratory and as a guest professor at Fermilab in the United States.

After returning to India in 2020, he took on a postdoctoral researcher role at IIT-Guwahati and transitioned to his current position in 2022.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Nath, stating that his accomplishment serves as an inspiration for the youth.

"From Hailakandi to the global stage, congratulations to Dr. Atanu Nath for receiving the 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, often referred to as the 'Oscars of Science'," Sarma remarked in a post on X.

"His success is a source of pride for the entire Northeast and a beacon of inspiration for young minds," he added.
