Japan's robotic wolves: A new weapon in the fight against bears
A technological innovation is now being used by some Japanese cities to protect their populations against wild animal invasions. Robotic "super monster wolves," or Robo-Wolf, were first introduced to deal with aggressive wild boars but are now also used to deter wandering black and brown bears.

Solar-powered robotic wolves hit the headlines in 2017 when Japanese researchers began testing prototypes against wild pigs ravaging farmland. It has since grown and a company, Wolf Camuy, has expanded the sale of these Sentry gadgets.
Robo-Wolf has menacing fangs, fur and glowing LED eyes. His head is able to shake from side-to-side and the device can shout 90dB. Robo-Wolf is very handy for rural Japanese communities with the threat of bears encroaching on living spaces. Robo-wolves are now being deployed as a deterrent to such bear encroachments.
The dual purpose of the super monster wolf is to protect both crops and farmers in rural communities. Recent reports have looked at the threats posed to human activities due to the shrinking of their habitat as a result of human activities.

There are signs that bear populations are increasing in some regions of Japan. It is estimated that there are about 22,000 bears in the Hokkaido region. There have been about 150 bear attacks in the last 60 years. However, four deaths were reported in 2021 alone. Many cases of bears wandering into cities bordering densely populated towns and wildlife areas have been reported.
It is believed that Robo-Wolf's howls effectively deter bears from encroaching within a 1 square kilometer radius. This is more elaborate and better than any electric fence installation. When deployed expertly, these robo-wolves can provide protection for aging communities and protect bears as well. The balance between safety and climate change in the bear's natural habitat, along with the expansion of development, is essential for a proper balance between animal rights and human development.
