Hyundai Unveils Plans for New 1.2-Litre Turbocharged Engine in India

Hyundai's Ambitious Engine Development in India
Hyundai has announced its plans to create a new 1.2-litre turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine in India. This innovative engine is set to be crucial for the company's upcoming hybrid and crossover models. According to reports, this TGDI engine will significantly enhance the performance of future hybrid and compact crossover vehicles.
Specifications of the New 1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol Engine
Sources indicate that this engine will debut in a new crossover model named the Bayon, which is expected to launch in the latter half of 2026. Following its introduction, the engine will be adapted for use in forthcoming hybrid models, promising a blend of performance, fuel efficiency, and affordability.
Hyundai's Hybrid Strategy in India
Hyundai is planning to integrate hybrid powertrains into its existing lineup, although specific timelines have yet to be disclosed. Reports suggest that the new Hyundai Creta and Palisade will be among the first models to feature hybrid technology, with the Palisade potentially housing a larger engine due to its size.
Potential Transmission Options for the New Engine
The new engine may be paired with either a dual-clutch transmission (DCT) or an electronic continuously variable transmission (e-CVT), depending on the application. It will comply with the latest Cafe 3 and BS7 emission standards. The development of this engine will rely heavily on cost management and localization, especially since GST rates for hybrids remain unchanged. The Bayon is expected to be positioned above the i20, rather than replacing it.
