How Job Interviews Are Becoming a Gateway for Online Scams: What You Should Be Aware Of

Most people these days rely on the internet to get job interviews and if opportunity knocks on the door, you're excited to see how things pan out. However, virtual interviews carry a huge risk, and have been used by scammers in recent times. If you're looking for a job and suddenly a really good opportunity comes along, chances are you'll go ahead with it, especially if all communication channels look clean. Well, a user who shared his plight on X recently talked about this. Interestingly, this scam originated from X itself, where the victim received a DM from a promising company in his field.

But little did he know that the popular brand would actually steal his money under the guise of the job interview and application process. The victim was then requested to connect on Discord, where he was asked questions related to the job profile, and also asked to join a server where like-minded people work. Once things ran smoothly, the guy was provided an interview link to the startup by HR, which he believed would virtually connect him to an in-house communication app like Zoom to move the process along.

The victim downloaded from the link but unfortunately, what he got was malware capable of deleting his digital wallet, from which he lost $3,000 (approx. Rs. 2,40,000) in quick time. This is not the first time we are hearing about online job scams that have come in various shapes and sizes recently. Some people use digital wallets to store their money and hackers have gone to the extent of breaking these wallets and having malware capable of bypassing the security has really created a problem for the given person here.

Understandably, he understands the need to be cautious in online activities and always check when you get these job offers that may appear out of nowhere and try to entice you to interview and talk more about money to join the company, which Really just a fraud in disguise.
