Effective Ayurvedic Remedies for Relieving Constipation
Understanding Constipation
Constipation is a common digestive issue characterized by difficulty in passing stools, which may become hard and dry. This condition can arise from various factors, including inadequate water intake, a diet low in fiber, prolonged sitting, stress, medication side effects, and irregular routines. In India, many individuals suffer from constipation, particularly during winter when metabolism slows down and water consumption decreases. Beyond causing discomfort, prolonged constipation can lead to complications such as hemorrhoids, gas, abdominal pain, and indigestion.
Challenges in Treating Constipation
There are countless remedies and medications available for treating constipation. However, the challenge lies in the fact that most of these solutions provide only temporary relief, with symptoms often returning after a short period. Given the widespread nature of this issue in India, it is essential to adopt effective methods for its treatment.
Ayurvedic Solution for Constipation
Dr. Saleem Zaidi, an expert in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, suggests a simple yet effective remedy for those struggling with constipation. He recommends consuming a glass of warm milk mixed with a pinch of rock salt and a tablespoon of psyllium husk (isabgol) every night before bed. This combination is said to effectively treat even chronic constipation. According to the expert, taking this remedy at night can lead to a complete bowel clearance the following day without pain or cramping, potentially eliminating constipation issues permanently.
How This Combination Works
The combination of milk, rock salt, and psyllium husk is regarded as a natural and effective remedy for constipation. Warm milk relaxes the intestines, facilitating easier stool passage. Rock salt acts as a natural laxative by drawing water into the intestines, softening the stool and promoting quicker relief from constipation. Meanwhile, psyllium husk is an excellent source of fiber that forms a gel-like substance in the stomach, increasing stool volume and aiding in painless passage. Together, these three ingredients soothe the digestive system, enhance intestinal movement, and, with regular consumption, can address constipation at its root. For optimal results, it is advised to consume this mixture 1 to 1.5 hours after dinner and 30 to 45 minutes before bedtime. It is important to consume the mixture immediately after preparation, as the psyllium husk will swell and form a gel if left to sit.
