Discovering a New Fish Species: Bathymyrus perplexus Found Off Paradip Coast

New Fish Species Identified by Indian Scientists

Brahmapur: Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Gopalpur have made an exciting discovery of a new fish species named Bathymyrus perplexus, located in the coastal waters near Paradip.

The initial collection of this species occurred in 2021, with a total of 32 specimens documented from Paradip, West Bengal, the Godavari region, and Kakinada between 2021 and 2025.

Although the first specimen was preserved, it remained unidentified until a subsequent specimen was collected in 2025 and sent to the ZSI facility in Gopalpur for thorough analysis.

A dedicated team, including Dr. Smrutirekha Acharya, Dr. Dipanjan Ray, Dr. Swarup Ranjan Mohanty, Subhendru Sekhar Mishra, Dr. Jitendra Kumar Sundaray, and Dr. Anil Mohapatra, conducted both morphological assessments and DNA testing on the samples. Their findings were published in the Bulletin of Marine Science after peer review, with the study appearing in an international marine science journal on September 24.
