Innovative Initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness

Bhubaneswar: A new Breast Self-Examination (BSE) booth was officially opened at the Medical Oncology Department of AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Friday, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, according to officials.

The booth, inaugurated by Ashutosh Biswas, the executive director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, is noted to be the first of its kind in India dedicated to breast self-examination.

Biswas emphasized that early detection is vital for improving outcomes in breast cancer cases. He stressed the significance of awareness, timely medical consultations, and self-examinations for women to identify any unusual changes and seek medical help promptly.

This newly launched portable BSE booth offers a private area where women can learn the self-examination process through clear instructions displayed on its walls.

The initiative aims to reduce hesitation, enhance awareness regarding breast health, and motivate women to consult healthcare professionals quickly if they notice any irregularities. Plans are also in place to establish a permanent booth in the future.

Sourav Kumar Mishra, an associate professor in the Medical Oncology Department, pointed out the increasing burden of breast cancer, noting that they have treated around 1,000 breast cancer patients since the department's inception four years ago, with approximately 100 new patients each month.

He expressed concern over the high number of patients diagnosed at advanced stages and the rising incidence of breast cancer among younger women, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing awareness campaigns, early detection, and timely treatment.

The department also underscored the importance of comprehensive cancer care, including practices like yoga, meditation, structured exercise, music, and relaxation techniques to help patients manage stress and enhance emotional well-being during treatment.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed globally every October, aims to raise awareness about breast cancer, encourage early diagnosis and treatment, and strengthen support for patients and survivors.
