Supreme Court Criticizes CAQM for Delays in Tackling Delhi's Pollution Crisis

Supreme Court's Strong Stance on Pollution Management

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has expressed dissatisfaction with the Commission of Air Quality Management (CAQM) for requesting a two-month delay regarding the temporary closure or relocation of toll plazas at Delhi's borders, a move aimed at alleviating traffic congestion.

During a session, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi instructed the CAQM to gather a panel of experts within two weeks and provide a report detailing the primary factors contributing to the escalating pollution levels.

The bench questioned, "Have you identified the pollution sources? Numerous articles and opinions are circulating publicly, and we are receiving feedback via email..."

They highlighted the significant role of heavy vehicles in pollution, stating, "The pressing question is how to tackle this issue... It is unacceptable to delay action until January 2 and then ask for another two months. The CAQM is neglecting its responsibilities."

The court urged the CAQM to explore long-term strategies progressively and to address the toll plaza situation without being swayed by the positions of various stakeholders.
