NASA and ISRO: A Promising Partnership for Future Space Exploration
Strengthening Ties in Space Exploration
New York: NASA is excited about its "remarkable" collaboration with ISRO, as expressed by Amit Kshatriya, a senior official of Indian-American descent at NASA.
Kshatriya, who serves as NASA's Associate Administrator and Chief Engineer, shared insights during an exclusive interview at the renowned Intrepid Museum.
"The collaboration we have with ISRO is truly remarkable," he stated, highlighting the impressive advancements ISRO is making in both scientific missions and human spaceflight.
He specifically mentioned the NISAR project, a joint initiative between NASA and ISRO aimed at launching an Earth-sensing orbiter in July 2025 to monitor changes in land, ice, water, and vegetation.
"This project has greatly benefited from our joint efforts," Kshatriya noted.
He emphasized the importance of international cooperation in space exploration, mentioning that NASA frequently collaborates with ISRO on various projects, including human space programs.
"It's crucial for America to lead in this area, but we want to do so with our values in mind. It's not merely about having the most advanced technology; it's about our principles and standards for exploration," he remarked.
Kshatriya also acknowledged India's commitment to the Artemis Accords, a set of principles guiding civil space exploration, which India signed alongside over 70 other countries.
"This commitment signifies our intention to explore space while respecting each other's integrity and democratic values. ISRO has been an exceptional partner in this regard," he added.
During his visit, Kshatriya participated in a panel discussion at the Intrepid Museum, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the public unveiling of 'Enterprise', NASA's prototype orbiter that laid the groundwork for the space shuttle program.
He was joined by former NASA Administrator and astronaut Charles F. Bolden Jr., as well as Peggy Whitson, a record-breaking astronaut and Director of Human Spaceflight at Axiom Space.
Whitson shared her experiences working with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the pilot for Axiom Mission 4, which she commanded.
"I was thrilled to have Shubhanshu Shukla on my AX4 mission. From what he has shared, it seems the country is very enthusiastic about the future of space exploration, particularly human spaceflight. I take great pride in him," she expressed.
Shukla, who hails from Lucknow and is a decorated pilot in the Indian Air Force, served as the pilot for Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) to the International Space Station.
He made history as the first Indian to visit the ISS and only the second Indian astronaut to travel to space in over four decades, following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma's flight aboard Soyuz T-11 in April 1984.
Launched in June 2025, Axiom Mission 4 featured Whitson as commander, Shukla as pilot, and mission specialists Sławosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. The crew spent 18 days conducting research activities at the ISS.
Whitson, recognized as America's most experienced astronaut, has accumulated 695 days in space, surpassing any other American or female astronaut globally.
She also holds the honor of being the first female commander of the International Space Station.
Bolden highlighted India's significant contributions to the global space program, stating, "India was the first nation to reach Mars on its first attempt, which is a remarkable achievement."
India's inaugural interplanetary mission, Mangalyaan or the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), was launched in November 2013 aboard PSLV-C25, making ISRO the fourth space agency to successfully place a spacecraft in Mars orbit.
Originally designed for a six-month mission, MOM exceeded expectations by remaining operational for seven years as of September 2021.
Bolden also noted the close collaboration with NASA during the Mars mission, stating, "We provide the Deep Space Network, which allows us to work with all our partners and offer navigation recommendations. Both India and the UAE are the only nations to achieve this on their first attempt," he explained.
The Orbiter was monitored by the Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) located near Bangalore, which was supported by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory Deep Space Network.
