International Conference on Sustainable Materials Concludes in Shimla

Mandi: The Him Science Congress Association (HSCA) successfully hosted a two-day event titled ‘International Conference on Sustainable Materials and Bioresource Integration: Bridging Technology and Traditional Knowledge’ at the Himalayan Forest Research Institute in Shimla.
More than 160 researchers and students from prominent academic and research institutions, both from India and abroad, participated in the conference. The event was inaugurated by the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shiv Pratap Shukla, who served as the chief guest. During his opening remarks, he praised the scientific community for their efforts in merging technological progress with traditional wisdom.

Scholarships and school-level science awards presented
During the inaugural session, the Chofla Award Scholarships, valued at ₹11,000 each, were awarded to students Shivaan Chorta and Oshin. This scholarship, sponsored by Vele’s Food Pvt. Ltd., Chamba, honors the managing director’s late parents and is aimed at meritorious Class 12 students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds pursuing science.
Additionally, science model-making competitions were conducted for school students. The first prize of ₹5,000 was awarded to Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Vikasnagar (Shimla), while Senior Secondary School, Lalpani (Shimla), received the second (₹3,000) and third prizes (₹2,000). These awards were established by Dr. Rahul Kalia, MD of Sudhir Industries Pvt. Ltd., in memory of his grandfather, to encourage aspiring young scientists.

Experts emphasized the significance of integrating artificial intelligence with traditional ecological knowledge to tackle future sustainability challenges. The sessions also delved into topics such as biodiversity, resource management, and advancements in material science.

Valedictory ceremony highlights unity of science and heritage
The valedictory ceremony was led by Ajay Kumar, Director of Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN), who was the chief guest. In his speech, he highlighted that while modern science is reshaping society, India’s traditional knowledge systems represent a valuable heritage that must be preserved and integrated.
“As we advance with modernization, our roots—our heritage and the wisdom passed down through generations—are equally vital for sustainable development,” Kumar remarked. He also reiterated SJVN’s commitment to supporting academic institutions for societal welfare.
Prof. Balbir Singh Kanth from NIT Jalandhar was present as the Guest of Honour.
