Why Odisha Government Says No to Online Sales of Puri Jagannath's Mahaprasad

The Odisha government has officially rejected proposals for the online sale of Mahaprasad from the Puri Jagannath temple. Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan stated that while the idea aimed to make the sacred offering accessible to devotees worldwide, concerns about maintaining its sanctity led to the decision. The government does not support any initiatives for online sales and encourages devotees to visit the temple for their Mahaprasad. A new pricing structure for the offering is expected to be announced soon, following reports of unauthorized online sales.

Odisha Government's Stance on Mahaprasad Sales

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha state government has turned down a proposal from various organizations to sell the 'Mahaprasad' of the Puri Jagannath temple through online platforms, as stated by Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Monday.

During a press briefing, Harichandan mentioned that some groups had approached the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) with a request to facilitate the delivery of 'Mahaprasad' and 'dry prasad' to devotees via online orders.

"While the idea of making prasad accessible to devotees around the globe is commendable, the government and SJTA have decided against it to maintain the sanctity of this sacred offering," he explained.

"We are concerned that the integrity of 'Mahaprasad' may not be preserved if it is shipped and delivered in this manner," he added.

The Law Minister emphasized that the government does not endorse or support any such initiatives.

"We do not have any proposals in place, nor will we encourage anyone to sell Mahaprasad online," he firmly stated.

He urged devotees to visit the Puri Jagannath temple to experience Mahaprasad in person.

Additionally, he mentioned that a new pricing structure for Mahaprasad will be introduced shortly.

This announcement follows media reports suggesting unauthorized online sales of Lord Jagannath's Mahaprasad.
