The Untold Story of Dushala: Sister of the Pandavas and Kauravas
Dushala: The Overlooked Sister
In the epic tale of Mahabharata, the narratives of the Pandavas, Kauravas, and Draupadi are well-known. However, few are aware of the only sister of the Pandavas and Kauravas.
Traditionally, we hear about the five Pandavas and the hundred Kauravas, but their sister's story remains largely untold.
Who was this sister of the five Pandavas and the hundred Kauravas, and what transpired when her husband cast a wicked gaze upon Draupadi?
Dushala: The Only Sister
Dushala was the daughter of Dhritarashtra and Gandhari, making her the sole sister of the Kauravas and Pandavas. It is said that she was adored by everyone during her childhood and youth. However, her life took a turn for the worse after her marriage.
She married Jayadratha, the king of Sindhu, who was known for his bravery but also for his dual nature.
Dushala's Struggles with Jayadratha
Reports suggest that Dushala often faced emotional turmoil due to her husband Jayadratha's unpredictable behavior. At times, he treated women with respect, while at other times, he crossed boundaries, tarnishing his image in their eyes. This inconsistency caused Dushala considerable distress.
The situation escalated when Jayadratha, due to his troubling behavior, attempted to abduct Draupadi, casting a malicious eye upon her.
The Abduction of Draupadi
When the Pandavas learned of Draupadi's abduction, they were furious and set out to rescue her.
Upon reaching Jayadratha, they intended to behead him. However, Draupadi intervened, reminding them that Jayadratha was her sister Dushala's husband, and killing him would leave her a widow.
Arjuna's Revenge
Listening to Draupadi, the Pandavas spared Jayadratha's life but punished him by shaving his head.
Following this incident, Jayadratha's desire for revenge against the Pandavas grew. Eventually, Duryodhana invited him to join the war with his army.
During the battle, Jayadratha deceitfully killed Arjuna's son, Abhimanyu. In retaliation, Arjuna, with Krishna's assistance, swiftly beheaded Jayadratha.
The Irony of Dushala's Fate
It is noteworthy that while Jayadratha was punished for his wicked intentions towards Draupadi, his actions ultimately led to Dushala becoming a widow after the death of her husband at the hands of Arjuna.
