The Enchantment of Apsara Pramlocha

Whenever the topic of celestial nymphs arises, the name of Indra, the king of the gods, inevitably follows. Ancient texts, including the Vedas and Puranas, describe Indra as a deity who often resorted to deceit to achieve his goals. One notable incident involved Rishi Kandu, who was deeply engrossed in meditation by the banks of the Gomti River. Disturbed by Kandu's intense penance, Indra decided to send the extraordinarily beautiful Apsara Pramlocha to disrupt his focus.

Pramlocha was stunning, and her captivating beauty quickly mesmerized Rishi Kandu, leading him to forget his spiritual practices. Ensnared by her charm, he became entangled in the worldly pleasures of household life, abandoning his rigorous austerities.

With Indra's plan successfully executed, Pramlocha wished to return to the heavens. However, Rishi Kandu, now infatuated, refused to let her leave. Despite her desire to return, Pramlocha feared Kandu's curse, which prevented her from departing.

One day, Rishi Kandu suddenly remembered his spiritual duties and announced his intention to resume his rituals. Pramlocha questioned him, pointing out that he had been living a worldly life for so long. Kandu retorted, asking how she could lecture him on meditation when she had only just arrived. Pramlocha then revealed the truth about her presence, stating that she had been with him for a staggering 907 years. This revelation filled Rishi Kandu with regret, realizing that all his spiritual efforts had been in vain.

Eventually, Rishi Kandu recognized his folly, renounced Pramlocha, and recommitted himself to his penance.
