Directions to Avoid When Offering Water

According to scriptures, when offering water to the Shivling, one should avoid facing north, east, or west. Offering water while facing these directions is considered inauspicious and may hinder the effectiveness of the worship. It is believed that these directions correspond to Lord Shiva's shoulders and back, thus making the offering less fruitful.

The Ideal Direction for Offering Water

The scriptures suggest that facing south while offering water is the most favorable direction. If devotees pour water on the Shivling every Monday or daily while facing south, it is believed that Lord Shiva will respond to their calls more promptly, resulting in greater blessings. When standing in this direction, the water should be directed to flow towards the north, ensuring that the offerings reach Lord Shiva effectively.

Important Considerations During Shiv Parikrama

After offering water to Lord Shiva, devotees typically perform a parikrama (circumambulation) around the Shivling. However, it is crucial to note that one should only complete half of the parikrama. Many may already be aware of this rule, but the reasoning behind it is significant. The sacred water offered to Lord Shiva flows outward, and stepping over it is considered disrespectful.
