Established in 1703, the Thathanian Kalibari Temple was built by the Tantrik Uday Narayan Brahmachari on a cremation ground. It was later restored in 1806 by a merchant named Shankar Ghosh. According to local legends, when Kolkata was surrounded by dense forests, a loud iron bell was rung to alert residents of bandit threats. The sound of this 'thathan' bell led to the area and temple being named 'Thathanian.' The idol of Goddess Kali in this temple is made of clay and is repainted annually in red and black hues.
