Ahoi Ashtami 2026: Rituals and Auspicious Timing for Worship
Significance of Ahoi Ashtami
Ahoi Ashtami, observed on the eighth day of the waning phase of Kartik month, is dedicated to ensuring the longevity and well-being of children. On this day, women fast without water and perform rituals in the evening, offering prayers to Ahoi Mata and paying homage to the stars or moon before breaking their fast.
Date and Timing for Ahoi Ashtami
This year, Ahoi Ashtami will be celebrated on November 1. The auspicious time for the Ashtami tithi begins at 2:51 PM, making it ideal to recite the fasting story after this time.
Complete Ritual Procedure for Ahoi Ashtami
Morning Preparations: Rise early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Then, perform a prayer at home and resolve to observe a day-long fast without water.
Recitation of the Story: Since the Ashtami tithi starts at 2:51 PM, the story of Ahoi Ashtami should be recited after this time.
Evening Worship and Image Installation: During the auspicious evening hour, create an image of Ahoi Mata on the wall using eight squares. Additionally, draw images of the Ahoi (Siyau) and her children nearby. If drawing is not feasible, a printed image can be purchased and placed on the wall.
Preparation of the Worship Area and Kalash Installation: Clean the worship area thoroughly after sunset, before the stars appear. Fill a pot with water and place it on a platform as a Kalash.
Worship of Ahoi Siyau: Create a silver Ahoi (Siyau) and insert two silver grains into it, stringing them together. Offer prayers with roli, rice, milk, and cooked rice to Ahoi Mata. Draw a Swastik symbol on the pot filled with water.
Offering and Story Recitation: Place halwa and some coins in a bowl for the offering. Gather with other women and listen to the Ahoi Ashtami story while holding seven grains of wheat.
Blessings and Garland Wearing: After the story, wear the silver Ahoi (Siyau) garland around your neck. Present the offering to your mother-in-law by touching her feet and seek her blessings.
Offering to the Stars and Breaking the Fast: After completing the worship, offer water to the stars using the filled pot. In some traditions, offering to the moon is also practiced, followed by breaking the fast after sighting the moon. This day holds special significance for charity and donations.
Celebrating Ahoi Mata
Women who have recently given birth or married off their children should celebrate Ahoi Mata by performing the following:
- Place four puris at seven spots on a plate, topped with halwa.
- Add a saree and some coins to the plate.
- With a prayerful gesture, present the plate to your mother-in-law.
- Your mother-in-law can keep the saree and coins while distributing the halwa and puris. This offering should also be sent to the homes of sisters and daughters.
