Zubeen Garg to be Honored Posthumously with 'Sangeet Sudhakar' Title

Jorhat, July 12: The Asam Sahitya Sabha has decided to honor the late cultural icon Zubeen Garg with the esteemed title of "Sangeet Sudhakar" in recognition of his significant contributions to Assamese music and culture.
During a press conference held on Sunday at the Dr Mahendra Nath Bora Memorial Conference Hall in Bhagawati Prasad Barooah Bhawan, Sabha General Secretary Debajit Bora announced that the executive committee and governing body had approved this honor, following a resolution made during the Panchratna-Guwahati session.
The formal ceremony to present the title will take place at 4 pm on July 30 at the Sangeetacharya Lakshmiram Barua Sadan in Guwahati, with Sabha president Dr Basanta Kumar Goswami officiating the event.
Attendees will include Sabha vice-president Padum Rajkhowa, along with Zubeen Garg's family members, including his father Kapil Thakur, wife Garima Saikia Garg, and sister Dr Pamee Borthakur.
In tribute to Garg, fans will showcase a cultural program featuring music, dance, and theatrical performances that celebrate his artistic legacy.
Additionally, the Sabha plans to host a national seminar focusing on the life and contributions of the legendary musician, highlighting his creative works, humanitarian values, and lasting impact on Assamese culture and society.
Research papers from scholars across the Northeast will be compiled and published in a book following the seminar.
Furthermore, the Sabha intends to translate a selection of Zubeen Garg's songs into English, Hindi, and Bengali to broaden the reach of his work.
On July 7, a delegation led by the Sabha's vice-president and general secretary visited Zubeen Garg's studio in Jonali to inform his family about the posthumous honor, which was met with appreciation from them.
