Zubeen Garg: A Cultural Icon and Catalyst for Change in Assam
Zubeen Garg's Impact on Assam's Social Movements
Guwahati, Sept 23: Zubeen Garg is renowned not just as a singer, composer, and actor, but also as a significant figure during times of crisis in Assam. His ability to attract large crowds, especially among the youth, has made him a vital force in movements aimed at safeguarding the interests of Assam.
During the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) in 2019, Zubeen was instrumental in rallying support and collaborated closely with the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) to spearhead the movement.
AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya remarked on Zubeen's contributions, stating that the Silpi Samaj, led by Zubeen, was quick to initiate action once the Bill was presented in Parliament. “Our goal was unified. We aimed for a peaceful protest, and Zubeen was on board, which facilitated our collaboration,” he noted.
Bhattacharya recounted that when violence erupted, threatening to undermine the movement, Zubeen convened with AASU leaders at Swahid Bhawan, leading to a collective decision to undertake a mass hunger strike, which proved effective in revitalizing the movement. His status as a major crowd magnet in the state encouraged diverse groups to participate.
He emphasized the importance of cultural figures in social movements, drawing parallels with historical icons like Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and Bishnu Prasad Rabha during the Independence struggle, and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's influence during the Assam Movement. Zubeen's role mirrored theirs in the anti-CAA protests.
Moreover, Zubeen has consistently addressed pressing issues in Assam during his performances, demonstrating his willingness to voice his opinions. He has also been proactive in fundraising efforts for flood victims, organizing football matches to gather support.
