Zoram People's Movement's Stance on FCRA Amendments

Aizawl, August 9 - The ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) in Mizoram announced on Sunday that it will not support the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) unless the state's concerns are addressed. B. Lalchanzouva, the party's media and publicity president, stated that the leadership has taken a definitive stance regarding the proposed changes. He mentioned that the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the party discussed the FCRA issue on August 5 at Chief Minister Lalduhoma's official residence and reached a clear decision on the matter.

Mizoram Minister Lalchanzouva emphasized, “Both of our MPs will firmly uphold our decision. If our position is not incorporated into the bill, we will not support its passage in Parliament.” The ZPM has one Lok Sabha seat and one Rajya Sabha seat, both held by its MPs. The party is neither part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nor the Congress-led INDIA coalition.

In June, Lalduhoma had dismissed the possibility of a formal alliance with the NDA at the center. He stated that joining the ruling coalition was not on the party's agenda and never had been. He further noted that while the ZPM values good relations with the central government, it does not see the need for a formal alliance with the NDA at this time.
