Zoram People's Movement Achieves Historic Win in Aizawl Municipal Elections

The Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) has achieved a significant victory in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation elections, winning 17 out of 19 seats. This marks a dramatic shift from the previous elections, where the Mizo National Front (MNF) held a majority. The voter turnout was reported at 62.77%, with over 239,000 eligible voters participating. The results indicate a strong political gain for the ruling party, while the BJP failed to secure any seats. This election is pivotal in shaping the political landscape of Aizawl, reflecting the changing dynamics among the major parties.

Aizawl, April 27: The Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) has achieved a remarkable victory in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, winning 17 out of 19 available seats.

The vote counting took place smoothly at the Aizawl Deputy Commissioner’s office, with results announced by the Mizoram State Election Commission.

In a significant shift, the Mizo National Front (MNF), which previously held 11 seats in the 2021 AMC elections, has been reduced to just one seat this time.

The Indian National Congress also secured one seat in the elections.

In contrast to their performance in the 2021 elections, where they won only six seats, this year's results mark a substantial political advancement for the ruling ZPM.

On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contested 11 seats but did not win any.

All three major parties—ZPM, MNF, and Congress—nominated 19 candidates each, with a total of 68 candidates, including 28 women, competing across the 19 wards.

Notably, six wards were reserved for women, and the ZPM won all of these seats.

The State Election Commission reported a voter turnout of 62.77% during the civic polls held on April 21, with over 239,000 eligible voters.

Earlier in the day, State Election Commissioner H Lalthlangliana noted that counting commenced at 8 am and proceeded without incident, with the ZPM taking an early lead in several wards before securing a decisive victory throughout the city.

The AMC, which was established in 2010 under the Mizoram Municipalities Act, 2007, consists of 19 wards. The Congress won the inaugural municipal elections in 2010, while the MNF dominated the subsequent elections in 2015 and 2021.
