Incident Overview

Bulawayo, July 8: Zimbabwe's fast bowler Kundai Matigimu has incurred a fine amounting to 15% of his match fees due to a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second Test match against South Africa at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred on Day 1, specifically during the 72nd over of South Africa's innings. Matigimu, while fielding, threw the ball at batter Lhuan-de Pretorius, striking him on the wrist from a close distance.

Violation and Consequences

Matigimu was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which addresses the inappropriate or dangerous throwing of a ball or cricket equipment at or near a player during an international match.

The charge was brought forth by the on-field umpires, along with the third and fourth officials. Matigimu acknowledged the offense and accepted the penalty suggested by match referee Ranjan Madugalle, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thus eliminating the need for a formal disciplinary hearing.

According to an ICC statement, "Matigimu admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thereby avoiding the need for a formal hearing."

In addition to the financial penalty, Matigimu received one demerit point, which will be recorded on his disciplinary record. This marks his first offense within a 24-month timeframe, meaning the immediate repercussions are minimal. However, any future infractions could result in more severe penalties under ICC guidelines.

As for the match, South Africa declared their innings at a formidable 626/5, with Wiaan Mulder remaining not out at a record 367. Zimbabwe was bowled out for 170 in their first innings and currently stands at 51/1 in their second innings.
