Zelenskyy Condemns Russia's Relentless Attacks Amid Ceasefire Talks
Ukrainian President's Outrage Over Russian Bombardment
In a strong statement on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his anger regarding Russia's ongoing airstrikes targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure, seemingly ignoring calls for a ceasefire from former US President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces have relentlessly attacked Ukraine's power grid and energy facilities for three consecutive nights, despite Trump's assertion that a ceasefire had been agreed upon 4.5 years after the invasion began.
In a significant shift, Zelenskyy has decided to pause Ukraine's long-standing offensive against Russian oil refineries, which had been causing fuel shortages in Russia. The last attack on an oil refinery was reported last Friday.
The Kremlin has yet to confirm any agreement on a truce, with a spokesperson stating that discussions are ongoing.
Trump's attempts to mediate the conflict have not yielded any tangible results.
Ukraine Claims Progress on the Battlefield
Ukrainian officials assert that they are successfully pushing back Russian troops in the eastern regions, which have been a focal point of conflict for years. Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi of Ukraine's Third Army Corps announced that they have reclaimed 277 square kilometers since the summer.
This claim remains unverified independently, and there has been no response from Russian officials.
Concerns are rising among Ukrainian leaders regarding diminishing US support for their military efforts, particularly after Trump negotiated a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to import Russian diesel, undermining international sanctions aimed at isolating Russia.
Ukrainian officials believe this agreement could bolster Russia's ongoing invasion, while European leaders express worries about Russia's broader ambitions and accuse it of engaging in hybrid warfare.
Zelenskyy's Diplomatic Efforts Continue
Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham in London on Wednesday, as Ukraine and its European allies work to strengthen defenses. Following his London visit, he may attend a European Union summit in Brussels later this week.
In a social media post, Zelenskyy urged the global community to respond decisively to Russia's continued aerial assaults, stating that Russia has squandered opportunities for de-escalation and has chosen to persist in its destructive campaign.
Russian Attacks Cause Power Outages in Kyiv
The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed that its forces targeted Ukraine's energy infrastructure in Kyiv and surrounding regions, hitting six power plants overnight.
Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi reported that all three of Kyiv's combined heat and power plants were struck, leaving approximately 600,000 residents without electricity.
Zelenskyy noted that Russia launched 39 ballistic missiles and over 120 drones aimed at critical infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv.
Concerns Over US Support and Technology Access
Ukrainian officials are increasingly worried that US military intelligence support and access to Elon Musk's Starlink satellite communications may be at risk. Starlink is crucial for Ukraine's defense against aerial threats and for coordinating drone strikes.
Reports indicate that SpaceX has imposed a speed limit on Starlink terminals used on drones, complicating operations for Ukrainian forces.
Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine did not receive the usual advance warnings about Russian missile strikes, raising concerns about the reliability of US intelligence support.
Ukraine Strikes Back at Russian Targets
In retaliation, Ukraine has launched attacks on Russian targets, including a data center in Saratov. Russian air defenses reportedly intercepted 902 Ukrainian drones across various regions, including Crimea.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that many drones were intercepted before reaching the capital, with no reported damage or casualties.
However, one fatality and damage to residential buildings were reported in the Saratov region following drone activity.
Zelenskyy Seeks Continued Support from Allies
During his visit, Prime Minister Burnham reaffirmed the UK's commitment to supporting Ukraine, stating that they will continue to back Ukraine's fight for peace in Europe.
Analysts suggest that Trump's recent actions may have inadvertently strengthened European resolve to support Kyiv, especially as winter approaches.
Both Britain and the European Union are considering additional sanctions against Russia.
