Zelensky Warns of Threats to Ukraine's Defense Amid Middle East Instability
Concerns Over Defense Resources
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has raised alarms regarding the potential impact of prolonged conflict in Iran on Ukraine's ability to secure essential missile defense systems from the United States. In an interview with a news media outlet, Zelensky explained that due to a decrease in production in the U.S., Kyiv has faced limited supplies of such weaponry. However, he noted that there have been no immediate disruptions in the current supply or intelligence sharing.
Zelensky mentioned that Ukraine is acquiring American hardware through the PURL program, which allows NATO member countries to fund weapon purchases for Kyiv. He stated, "Through this program, we can include and purchase anti-ballistic missiles for the Patriot system and other crucial weapons. We do not have this facility with our European neighbors."
Impact of Middle East Instability
Despite these efforts, he expressed concern that escalating instability in the Middle East could divert resources away from Ukraine's defense needs. He remarked, "Clearly, the significant challenge posed by the Middle East conflict and Iran puts all these packages at risk." Zelensky pointed out that the U.S. has supplied only a "very limited number" of these systems, attributing this scarcity to manufacturing capabilities, stating, "We did not have a lot. We understand why this is the case, as production in the U.S. is not very high."
Ongoing Security Risks
The president warned that a prolonged conflict in the Middle East or delays in ceasefire could adversely affect Ukraine's security. He added, "If the war continues or there are delays in ceasefire... it will not be good. We may face even greater risks associated with anti-ballistic missiles." Amid these challenges, Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine is sharing its strategic expertise related to drone warfare with Middle Eastern countries. After four years of countering drones deployed by the Russian military—many of which are of Iranian design—Kyiv is now providing its regional partners with technical know-how.
