New Delhi: Indian football enthusiasts can finally celebrate. After a prolonged wait filled with uncertainty, Zee Entertainment has officially acquired the broadcasting rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in India. This confirmation was announced today.

Fans can catch the FIFA World Cup matches live on Zee Group's newly launched channel, 'United8 Sports'. Additionally, those who prefer online viewing can stream the matches live via the Zee5 app.


Long-Term Media Rights Secured

This agreement extends beyond just the 2026 World Cup. Zee Entertainment has secured the media rights for all significant FIFA tournaments in India through 2034. This development alleviates concerns among fans regarding the broadcast of the World Cup in India.


Challenges with Match Timings

One of the main hurdles was the timing of the matches. The upcoming World Cup will take place in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, which means matches will occur late at night or early in the morning in India. Major players like JioHotstar and Sony Sports were reluctant to bid, fearing low ad revenue due to these unusual hours.


Negotiations and Price Adjustments

Initially, FIFA sought around $100 million for the broadcasting rights to the 2026 and 2030 World Cups. However, after negotiations stalled, they reduced the price to $60 million. Other companies reportedly offered bids of only up to $20 million. The situation shifted when Zee Group made a significant return to sports broadcasting last week with the launch of its 'United8 Sports' channels. While the exact deal amount remains undisclosed, reports indicate it exceeds $20 million.


A Historic Tournament Ahead

Zee Group CEO Punit Goenka expressed excitement about bringing one of the world's premier sporting events to Indian audiences. Notably, this World Cup will feature 48 teams for the first time in history. The tournament is set to commence on July 11, and the announcement of the official Indian broadcaster comes just 11 days prior.
