Zaheer Khan's Appointment as CSK Head Coach

Ravichandran Ashwin, the former off-spinner for India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has expressed his views on Zaheer Khan's recent appointment as the head coach for IPL 2027. Zaheer takes over from Stephen Fleming, who concluded an 18-year tenure with the team to lead England's Test squad.

Following Fleming's exit, CSK was on the lookout for a new coach. Given the franchise's legacy, it was essential to find someone who could earn respect and collaborate effectively with MS Dhoni. After two months of speculation, Zaheer was officially signed on a one-year contract.

Dhoni's Influence in the Decision

Reports indicate that MS Dhoni, the former captain of CSK, played a crucial role in selecting Zaheer Khan for the coaching position. CEO Kasi Vishwanathan mentioned that Dhoni recommended his teammate from the 2011 World Cup for the role.

Ashwin's Insights on the Partnership

Ravichandran Ashwin noted that Zaheer's appointment was unexpected, as he was not previously considered for a coaching role. On his YouTube channel, Ashwin elaborated on why this partnership is likely to succeed.

He emphasized that Zaheer possesses the experience and confidence to challenge Dhoni's ideas and offer his own insights. Their long-standing relationship dates back to their time on the Indian team, where Zaheer was a senior player under Dhoni's captaincy.

Ashwin remarked, "Zaheer has the ability to disagree with Dhoni. Others, like Ruturaj Gaikwad, may hesitate to suggest alternatives, but Zaheer can approach Dhoni with suggestions due to their strong rapport."

A Decade of Collaboration

Zaheer Khan and MS Dhoni shared the Indian dressing room for ten years, starting in 2004, and were part of India's memorable 2011 World Cup victory, where Zaheer was among the top wicket-takers.

Ashwin further explained that Zaheer's seniority during Dhoni's early captaincy fosters a unique level of mutual respect, enabling them to communicate effectively and make decisions collaboratively.

He stated, "MS Dhoni and Zaheer Khan have always had a good relationship. It’s evident that this decision was made with Dhoni's approval. Their combined intelligence and strategic thinking will likely lead to harmonious discussions and agreements."

Zaheer's Previous Roles

Before taking on the head coach role at CSK, Zaheer Khan was the Director of Cricket Operations for the Mumbai Indians and later served as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants, where he contributed his tactical knowledge and bowling expertise.
