Zafar Iqbal Expresses Joy Over Lifetime Achievement Award

Renowned Indian hockey player Zafar Iqbal shared his excitement after receiving the esteemed Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award during the Hockey India 8th Annual Awards 2025 held on Friday. He expressed that the recognition was unexpected and filled him with happiness and pride.


A Legacy of Success

Zafar Iqbal played a pivotal role in securing India's Gold Medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. His accolades also include two Silver medals from the Asian Games in 1978 and 1982, along with a Bronze medal at the Champions Trophy in 1982. The Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award, which comes with a prize of Rs 25 lakh, was presented to him in New Delhi. Reflecting on the award, he remarked, "I didn't anticipate this. It was a surprise for me and others. I am truly honored to receive the Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award."


Optimism for India's Future in Hockey

Discussing India's chances in the forthcoming FIH World Cup and Asian Games, Zafar Iqbal noted the blend of new and seasoned players in the team, suggesting they have the potential to achieve a podium finish. He stated, "We secured bronze in the last two Olympics, and while the team has seen some changes, I believe we can compete at a high level. On a good day, reaching the semifinals or podium is within our grasp."


India is set to compete in Pool D of the FIH World Cup 2026 alongside England, Pakistan, and Wales, beginning their journey against Wales on August 15.


Focus on Upcoming Tournaments

Hardik Singh, a member of the Indian men's team and recipient of the Hockey India Balbir Singh Sr. Award for Player of the Year (Rs 20 lakh), expressed his gratitude and emphasized the importance of teamwork. He stated, "I am thrilled to receive this award. It feels great when hard work is acknowledged. All credit goes to my team, staff, and family. Our focus now shifts to the World Cup and Asian Games."


Forward Mandeep also highlighted the significance of the awards in motivating players, stating, "These recognitions inspire us to perform better. The World Cup is our primary goal, and we are committed to giving our all to secure a long-awaited medal."
