Yuzvendra Chahal's Transformation Ahead of IPL 2026: A New Commitment to Fitness
Chahal Prepares for IPL 2026
Yuzvendra Chahal, the spinner for Punjab Kings, is making significant changes in both his personal and professional life as he gears up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, set to kick off on March 28. The Punjab Kings will face off against the Gujarat Titans in their first match at the New PCA Stadium in Mullanpur on March 31.
Chahal will continue with PBKS for a second consecutive season after being retained for INR 18 crore prior to last year's mini-auction. Before joining Punjab Kings in 2025, he played for teams like the Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Rajasthan Royals, earning a reputation as one of the league's most skilled wrist spinners.
His career has largely revolved around domestic cricket in Haryana and the IPL, as he has not featured in India's white-ball squad since his last T20I appearance against the West Indies in 2023. Although he was part of the Indian team that clinched the T20 World Cup in 2024, he did not play in any matches.
A Commitment to Fitness
As he prepares for the upcoming IPL season, Chahal has made the decision to abstain from alcohol, a choice he announced on AB de Villiers' YouTube channel.
During his appearance on the channel, Chahal shared, "I have good news for you. I’ve stopped drinking alcohol, and it’s been more than six months now."
At 35, he expressed his desire to be more active and contribute 150% to his team. "As a senior bowler and player, I want to set an example for others in the IPL," he added.
De Villiers praised Chahal's decision, emphasizing the negative impacts of alcohol and how it can detrimentally affect performance.
Reflecting on Last Season's Final
In the previous IPL season, the Punjab Kings made it to the final for the first time since 2014, showcasing a strong performance throughout the league and defeating the Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2. However, they fell short against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final.
Chahal noted that the absence of Marco Jansen in the final was a significant factor, stating, "If he had played, we would have had a much stronger chance of winning the title."
Jansen, who was crucial for the team with 16 wickets in 14 matches, had to leave the squad to prepare for the World Test Championship final against Australia.
Personal Reflections and Future Goals
Chahal expressed disappointment over his performance in Qualifier 2 and the final due to injuries sustained earlier in the tournament. He mentioned, "I was a bit disappointed with myself. After the KKR game, I had a rib fracture, and later, my knuckle got fractured."
He aims to prioritize his health this year, stating, "This year, I want to take care of my body first."
In IPL 2025, Chahal was among the top wicket-takers for Punjab Kings, claiming 16 wickets, including two four-wicket hauls, with an average of 26.87 and an economy rate of 9.55 across 14 matches. He remains the leading wicket-taker in IPL history, with 221 wickets at an average of 22.76.
