Yuvraj Singh Recalls Encounter with Young Jasprit Bumrah in Nets
A Memorable Encounter in the Nets
Yuvraj Singh, the former all-rounder for India, shared a captivating anecdote from his comeback journey, reminiscing about a time when he asked a young Jasprit Bumrah, then just 16, to halt his bowling during a practice session due to the teenager's remarkable speed and intensity.
In a candid conversation on the Overlap Cricket YouTube channel with Michael Vaughan, Yuvraj recounted, "Back in 2013, while I was attempting to return to cricket after my cancer treatment, this kid was bowling at an incredible pace. I told him, 'I want this kid out of the nets, stop bowling to me.'"
The iconic all-rounder emphasized Bumrah's lethal bowling even at a young age, stating, "He was bowling with such ferocity. I was like, 'Kid, stop—whoever you are!'" Yuvraj praised Bumrah's raw speed and unique bowling style, which were evident even in his formative years.
From Promising Talent to Cricketing Great
Further commending Bumrah's development, Yuvraj noted that he has emerged as one of the most formidable bowlers in contemporary cricket. "Considering how the game is changing, he must be regarded as the best. Batsmen are hesitant to attack him, opting instead to rotate the strike against other bowlers. When they do attempt to take him on, he doesn't let them succeed. His intelligence, skill, and deceptive action make it challenging to read his slower balls," he remarked.
Bumrah has established himself as one of the premier fast bowlers globally, known for his speed, precision, and ability to challenge even the top batsmen, a quality that was apparent even in his early career.
A Key Player in Crucial Matches
Earlier this year, Bumrah showcased his significance during the knockout rounds of a major tournament, contributing to the team's victory in the T20 World Cup on March 8.
Throughout the tournament, he excelled, taking two wickets in the Super 8 match against the West Indies, including the crucial wicket of the in-form Shimron Hetmyer.
In the semi-final against England, where bowlers struggled to maintain their economy, Bumrah stood out by conceding only eight and six runs in the 16th and 18th overs, respectively. His impressive bowling figures of 4-0-33-1 were pivotal as India won by just seven runs while defending a target of 253.
He followed this performance with a remarkable four-wicket haul in the final against New Zealand, allowing only 15 runs in his four overs, earning him the Player of the Match award.
Currently, Bumrah is participating in the IPL 2026, representing the five-time champions, Mumbai Indians.
