Historic Achievement in Wushu

Fifteen-year-old Rajkumari Lanchenbi Chanu from Manipur has made history by securing India's inaugural Wushu medal at the Youth Olympic Games 2026 held in Dakar, Senegal. With a total score of 18.039 points, she clinched the bronze medal after a remarkable performance, scoring 8.723 in Gunshu (staff routine) and 9.316 in Changquan (long fist).

Rajkumari, the second daughter of Rajkumar Arun Singh, a logistics driver, and Rajkumar Ongbi, an artist at the Manipur Dramatic Union, hails from Heirangoithong Ahongshangbam Leikai but has recently moved to Kakwa Nameirakpam Leikai in Imphal East District. She began her athletic journey in gymnastics in 2017, earning her first bronze medal in the State Level Gymnastics Championship in 2019. Transitioning to Wushu in 2021, she has since garnered multiple medals in national competitions and made her international debut at the Youth Olympic Games.

Athlete's Perspective

In an interview, Rajkumari expressed her joy over winning the bronze medal, dedicating her success to her coaches and family for their unwavering support. Although she aimed for gold or silver, she acknowledged that mistakes hindered her from achieving a higher placement. "I am thrilled to have won a bronze medal at the inaugural Wushu Youth Olympic Games in 2026. I want to dedicate this to my coaches and family, who have been my motivation. I believed I could win gold or silver, but errors led to my bronze finish. Next time, I will strive to bring home the gold medal," she stated.

Family Sacrifices and Financial Challenges

Every athlete's journey is often marked by sacrifices and challenges, and Rajkumari's story is no different. Her father, Rajkumar Arun Singh, shared the financial hurdles they faced in supporting her international aspirations. He highlighted the high costs associated with sports gear and preparations, which posed significant challenges for their economically disadvantaged family.

"Financially, we struggle immensely. My earnings range from 10,000 to 12,000 rupees, which must cover household expenses and support my daughter. Before tournaments, we often borrow money, and while some lend willingly, repaying debts can be difficult. It's hard to articulate just how challenging it is," he explained.

Despite these obstacles, he expressed gratitude for the support from coaches and the government, which covers travel and airfare expenses through various associations. However, he noted that financial assistance is not always timely, complicating their situation further.

Overwhelming Pride

Rajkumar Arun Singh expressed immense pride in his daughter's achievement, stating that she has become a source of pride for the entire nation. He recalled the moment he witnessed her medal win on his mobile phone while on duty, overwhelmed with joy. He emphasized the family's commitment to supporting her dreams, inspired by her determination and her coach's encouragement.

"Words cannot express my happiness. She is not just my daughter; she has become the daughter of the entire nation. I watched her win on my mobile phone since we don't even have a TV at home. When she won, I was ecstatic, driving at the time, and my colleagues had to calm me down. They reminded me that my daughter has made India proud!" he shared.

"We are determined to do whatever it takes to support her ambitions and bring glory to our country. For my daughter, we are ready to make any sacrifice," he concluded.
