Young Man Survives After Impaling Himself with Nail in Uttar Pradesh

A startling incident has emerged from Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, where a young man, struggling with addiction and depression, impulsively drove a three-inch nail into his own head. The nail penetrated through the bone and into his brain. His family rushed him to the Fatehpur Community Health Center, where doctors referred him to Kanpur's GSVM Medical College three days ago. A team from the neurology department successfully performed a complex surgery to save his life.

Background of the Victim

The victim, Vijay Kumar, works as a welder. His father and brother are employed in Bengaluru, leaving him to live alone in the village, which led him to associate with the wrong crowd and fall into substance abuse. Reports indicate that Vijay had been under the influence of drugs continuously for 24 hours. Three days prior to the incident, he succumbed to his depression and impulsively impaled himself with the nail.

Challenging Surgery

As the nail reached Vijay's brain, his condition deteriorated rapidly, causing him to experience seizures and loss of consciousness. He was placed in the emergency ward at Halat Hospital. The surgery posed significant challenges for the neurosurgeons due to the severity of his injuries.

Successful Operation and Recovery

Dr. Manish Singh, head of the neurosurgery department at GSVM Medical College, reported that the young man arrived in critical condition. After reviewing the CT scan, it was confirmed that the nail had caused significant damage to his brain, which was successfully addressed during surgery. Dr. Singh noted that the patient is now in stable condition and will undergo counseling in the psychiatric department once he fully recovers.
