Yogasana's Inclusion in Commonwealth Games
On Tuesday, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that Yogasana will be recognized as an indigenous sport during India's hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2030. This statement was made in the national capital at the launch event for the inaugural World Yogasana Championship, scheduled from June 4 to 8.
Details of the World Yogasana Championship
The first-ever World Yogasana Sports Championship will take place in Ahmedabad from June 4 to June 8, featuring participation from over 75 countries and more than 500 athletes. Mandaviya emphasized that yoga is not just a practice but a cultural essence and a way of life for many. He noted that this championship marks the beginning of a global initiative, with future events planned in various cities worldwide.
Support and Collaboration
The 2026 World Yogasana Championship is backed by several governmental bodies, including the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Ministry of Ayush, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), and the Gujarat Yogasana Sports Association. This collaboration aims to elevate Yogasana's status on the global sports stage.
Competition Structure
The championship will feature various competitive categories such as Traditional Yogasana, Artistic Yogasana, Rhythmic Pairs, and Team Events. Athletes will compete in junior, youth, and elite divisions, adhering to internationally recognized rules and judging standards.
Aiming for Olympic Recognition
The World Yogasana Championship is seen as a significant step towards gaining recognition for Yogasana in major international multi-sport events, with aspirations for eventual inclusion in the Olympics.
