Yashasvi Jaiswal, a promising cricketer from Bhadohi, is currently facing significant challenges. Despite showcasing potential as a regular player for the Indian cricket team across formats, he finds himself in a state of uncertainty regarding national selection.

The White-Ball Dilemma

In 2024, Jaiswal observed as the Indian team opted for experienced players over emerging talents for key T20 matches. Veteran players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were chosen for challenging matches in the USA and the Caribbean. Later, during the 50-over format, he faced further disappointment.

Initially included in the 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy, Jaiswal was dropped when head coach Gautam Gambhir decided to include a fourth spinner, making him expendable once again.

In a surprising turn, when Shubman Gill, seen as a future captain, was left out of T20 selections, Ishan Kishan was brought in instead. Kishan's impressive 49-ball century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy overshadowed Jaiswal's own recent 50-ball century against the same team.

Jaiswal's last T20 international appearance was in Sri Lanka in July 2024. Since then, the focus has shifted to Test cricket, with an emphasis on the red-ball format. His recent T20I scores—93, 12, 40, 30, and 10—were all while opening, showcasing a strike rate near 200, aligning with India's aggressive batting strategy.

Vengsarkar remarked, "Nobody should leave a match winner out of the team." He supported the selection committee's decision to exclude Gill based on current form but indicated that he would have chosen Jaiswal instead, praising his consistent performance.

In T20 cricket, players who are sidelined often struggle to maintain their form. While others kept themselves in the selectors' spotlight by participating in various series, Jaiswal faded from view—not due to poor performance, but because the focus shifted elsewhere.

Vengsarkar noted, "You are bound to lose confidence if you are made to feel that you are not required in one format. This game is all about confidence, which comes from consistent performances."

Former opener and coach WV Raman emphasized the need for patience, stating, "Certain conversations can't be revealed in public but now the World T20 squad has been selected and one can't do anything. Jaiswal will have to bide his time, but I am confident that he will play many more World Cups."

Vengsarkar concluded with a poignant statement about Jaiswal's situation and potential, saying, "I wouldn't have told him anything because I wouldn't have dropped him in the first place."
