Yamini Maurya's Remarkable Achievement

Yamini Maurya has successfully added a silver medal to India's achievements at the 2026 Commonwealth Games by excelling in the women's 57kg judo category. This accomplishment, as highlighted in a press release, signifies a pivotal moment for Indian judo, marking the third medal for the nation in this sport during the Games.

Historic Wins by Fellow Athletes

Prior to Yamini's success, Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh made headlines by securing India's inaugural gold medals in judo at the Commonwealth Games, according to the release.

Training and Progression

Yamini trains at the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS) and has shown consistent growth in her judo career. Her recent silver medal not only highlights her personal achievements but also emphasizes the increasing prowess of Indian judo on the global stage, concluding a remarkable campaign for the Indian team.

A Journey of Resilience

Before the Commonwealth Games, Yamini shared her inspiring journey with IIS TV, reflecting on her path to this prestigious event. She recalled, "When I started in school, I didn't even have proper mats; I trained on regular mats and mattresses. I had no idea I would compete in the Commonwealth Games or even what they were."

Overcoming Challenges

Yamini's road to the podium was fraught with challenges. After undergoing surgery in 2024, she faced nearly a year away from competitive judo. Looking back, she mentioned, "It took almost a year to get back on the mat. Maintaining my weight was tough due to significant weight gain during recovery, but I managed to compete while being cautious of my injury."

Chasing the Olympic Dream

In her conversation with IIS TV, Yamini also reflected on her initial inspiration to take up judo. "I had no idea what the Olympics were until my district coach encouraged me to aim for them. Deep down, I knew I had to pursue that dream," she shared.

The silver medal at the Commonwealth Games represents a significant milestone in Yamini's journey, showcasing her resilience and determination while contributing to India's historic achievements in judo.
