X's Commitment to Combat Illegal Content

New Delhi, Jan 4: The microblogging platform X, owned by Elon Musk, has announced its intention to tackle illegal content by removing it, suspending accounts responsible for such uploads, and collaborating with local authorities as necessary. This declaration was made on Sunday.

The announcement from X's Global Government Affairs account came shortly after the platform indicated that users of its AI tool, Grok, who create illegal content would face similar repercussions as those who upload such material.

"Individuals utilizing Grok to produce illegal content will encounter the same penalties as if they were to upload illegal material," Musk stated on X, responding to concerns regarding inappropriate images.

This statement follows a directive from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity), which instructed X to promptly remove vulgar and unlawful content, particularly that generated by its AI service, Grok.

In an order issued on January 2, Meity mandated X to take action against offending content and users, requiring a detailed report of actions taken within 72 hours. The ministry cautioned that non-compliance could lead to legal consequences.

The government's directive highlighted public concerns and feedback from parliamentary members regarding certain content on X that violates Indian laws on decency and obscenity.

Meity also raised alarms about the misuse of the Grok AI service, alleging that users were creating fake accounts to generate and share derogatory and vulgar images or videos of women.

This latest directive follows a December 29 advisory where Meity urged social media platforms to reassess their compliance measures and take swift action against obscene and illegal content, warning of potential prosecution for ongoing violations.

Previously, Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi had reached out to Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting immediate action regarding the rising misuse of Grok to create and disseminate vulgar images of women on social media.

The Global Government Affairs account also provided a link to X's rules, which permit the sharing of "consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior, provided it is appropriately labeled and not prominently displayed."
