World's Largest Shivling to be Installed in Bihar's Virat Ramayan Temple

Installation of the Massive Shivling

Patna/Motihari, January 6, 2026: The Virat Ramayan Temple in East Champaran district of Bihar is set to feature the world's largest Shivling, known as the Sahasralingam Shivling. This monumental Shivling stands at an impressive height of 33 feet and weighs 210 tons, carved from a single block of black granite. The grand installation is scheduled for January 17.

During a press conference held on Sunday, Sayan Kunal, secretary of the Shri Mahavir Sthan Nyas Committee, shared this exciting news. He mentioned that the Shivling has arrived in Bihar from Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu and is currently being transported to the Virat Ramayan Temple complex in Kaithwalia village, located in the Kalyanpur block of East Champaran via Gopalganj.

On the day of installation, rituals including puja, havan, and various ceremonies will take place. The Mahabhishek will be performed using water from five sacred rivers—Kailash Mansarovar, Gangotri, Haridwar, Prayagraj, and Sonpur. Additionally, there will be a flower shower from a helicopter, and scholars of the four Vedas will chant mantras. However, the pran pratishtha of the Shivling will occur after the temple's construction is completed.

This Shivling is designed in the Sahasralingam form, featuring 1008 smaller Shivlings intricately carved into it. Its creation in Mahabalipuram took a decade of dedicated effort. The Virat Ramayan Temple is an ambitious project by the Mahavir Mandir Nyas Committee in Patna, spanning 120-140 acres. The temple's main spire will reach a height of 270 feet, making it the largest Ramayana-centered temple in the world, with construction expected to be completed by 2030.
