World Glaucoma Week Kicks Off

New Delhi/Jaypur, March 8, 2026: The World Glaucoma Week (March 8-14, 2026) has officially commenced. This global initiative, organized by the World Glaucoma Association (WGA), carries the theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World” this year, aiming to unite communities worldwide to prevent blindness caused by glaucoma. Often referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma gradually robs vision without noticeable symptoms and is a leading cause of irreversible blindness globally.

In India, approximately 12 million individuals are affected by glaucoma, with over 90% of cases remaining undetected in the early stages. Timely screening and treatment can preserve vision in 80-90% of cases. Throughout this week, numerous hospitals, eye institutes, and health organizations across the country are hosting free eye check-up camps, offering services such as eye pressure checks, fundus examinations, and glaucoma screenings.

Key Initiatives and Recommendations

  • Several hospitals (including Artemis, Chettinad, MGM Eye Institute, etc.) are providing free super-specialist consultations, discounts on eye pressure checks, and glaucoma scans.

  • Individuals at risk (those aged 40 and above, with a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure, or long-term steroid use) should undergo regular check-ups.

  • Experts recommend: Get your eyes checked at least once a year, especially for those over 40.

  • Symptoms to watch for include eye pain, seeing halos, blurred vision, and headaches—these could indicate a problem, so consult a doctor immediately.

In Jaipur, various eye hospitals and government health centers are also setting up free check-up camps this week. Residents are encouraged to contact local hospitals or the National Health Mission (NHM) to take advantage of these services.
