Introduction to WPL 2026

The Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 is set to commence today, January 9, with the final match scheduled for February 5. This season's matches will take place in Navi Mumbai and Vadodara, featuring an increased prize pool.

Tournament Overview

The fourth season of the WPL will feature five teams: the reigning champions Mumbai Indians, the 2024 titleholders Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Giants, Delhi Capitals, and UP Warriorz. They will compete in a total of 24 matches, vying for the title in India's leading women's T20 league.

Historical Context

Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the only teams to have won the tournament, with Mumbai securing victories in 2023 and 2025, while Bengaluru claimed their first title in 2024. This season will reveal if Mumbai can defend their title or if another team will emerge victorious.

Unique Scheduling

For the first time, the WPL will be held during an ICC-designated international window in January-February, allowing top international players to participate without scheduling conflicts.

Opening Match Details

The tournament will kick off with a match between the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the DY Patil Sports Academy Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Significance of the Venue

The Dr DY Patil Stadium holds a significant place in Indian women's cricket history, as it was the venue where Harmanpreet Kaur and her team achieved a historic Women's ODI World Cup victory against South Africa.

Prize Money Breakdown

The total prize pool for the top two teams is set at INR 9 crore, with the champion receiving INR 6 crore and the runner-up getting INR 3 crore. This prize structure mirrors that of the previous season, where Mumbai Indians won the title.

Individual Awards

In addition to team prizes, individual accolades will be awarded, including INR 5 lakh for the Player of the Tournament, Orange and Purple Caps winners, Most Sixes, and Best Strike Rate. The Player of the Final will earn INR 2.5 lakh, while INR 1 lakh will be given to the Player of the Match in league and Eliminator matches.

Total Prize Money

The overall prize money, including team awards and individual recognitions, amounts to approximately INR 9.50 crore.

Playing XI Regulations

Each team is permitted to field a maximum of four overseas players, with the remaining seven being Indian. However, if an overseas player is from an associate nation, teams can include up to five overseas players.

New Additions to Teams

This season, three players from associate nations have been signed, including two from Scotland and one from the USA, allowing teams to slightly expand their overseas player roster while still focusing on Indian talent.

Captaincy Changes

Ahead of the WPL 2026, there have been changes in team captaincy following the Mega Auction. Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, and Ashleigh Gardner will continue as captains for MI, RCB, and GG, respectively. Jemimah Rodrigues has been appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals after Meg Lanning's release, though Lanning has since regained captaincy with UP Warriors.
