Who Will Claim the Prestigious Nobel Peace Prize This Year? Insights and Predictions
Nobel Peace Prize Announcement Approaches
Oslo: The announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize, regarded as one of the highest honors globally, is set to take place this Friday in Oslo, Norway.
This year, analysts speculate that potential nominees may include the International Space Station, humanitarian teams in Sudan, advocates for children's rights in Ukraine, and two prominent international courts. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has gained attention in prediction markets, while U.S. President Donald Trump, who is currently engaged in tensions with Iran, has expressed his desire for the award, claiming he deserves it.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has received nominations from 287 candidates for this year's prize, with over 25% being organizations. Experts suggest that the committee often emphasizes sustainable peace, the fostering of international brotherhood, and the diligent efforts of institutions that support these objectives.
Last year's Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for her efforts towards a democratic transition in Venezuela, earning her recognition as a woman who 'keeps the flame of democracy alive amidst increasing darkness.'
Machado presented her Nobel medal to Trump shortly after the U.S. removed former President Nicolas Maduro from power, although this act was largely symbolic as the Nobel Committee has stated that the award itself cannot be transferred.
Nominations for the prize can be submitted by a select group of individuals and organizations, including national politicians, university professors, directors of foreign policy institutes, past Nobel laureates, and members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
Earlier this week, four Nobel prizes were announced. The Nobel for medicine was awarded to three scientists for their development of a tool that utilizes light to explore brain functions. The physics prize recognized a scientist for his work on a rare group of neutrinos, while the chemistry award honored two scientists for their research on mirror images in molecules, a breakthrough that has contributed to the creation of numerous drugs.
Canadian poet Anne Carson received the literature prize for her 'bold and inventive' works that blend classical and modern elements, blurring the lines between poetry and prose.
The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences is scheduled to be announced on Monday.
This year's prize money totals 12 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.2 million), awarded to either an individual, a small group of laureates, or an organization.
Celebrating 125 Years of the Peace Prize
This year marks the 125th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize, which has been awarded to 112 individuals and 28 organizations since its establishment in 1901. The Red Cross has received the honor three times, while the UN refugee agency has been recognized twice.
Out of the 112 individual laureates, only 20 have been women, with eight of those women receiving the prize in the last 15 years.
Malala Yousafzai, an education activist, holds the record as the youngest laureate, winning the award at the age of 17 in 2014.
The United States leads with 24 awards given to its institutions or individuals, followed by the United Kingdom with 13 and Switzerland with 11. However, no laureate identified as American has won since Barack Obama received the prize in 2009.
The Nobel Peace Prize has gone unawarded on 19 occasions, primarily during the world wars. Notably, in 1948, the year Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated, no prize was given, despite him being nominated 12 times without success.
In 1939, a Swedish parliament member nominated Adolf Hitler, but later withdrew the nomination.
