Navi Pillay: A Champion for Human Rights


Oslo: Navanethem Navi Pillay, a distinguished South African jurist of Indian heritage, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her significant contributions to the fields of peace and international law. This announcement was made on Friday.


Pillay was born on September 23, 1941, in Durban to Tamil Indian parents. She experienced the harsh realities of apartheid, which fueled her commitment to defending anti-apartheid activists and advocating for human rights and equality.


In a groundbreaking achievement, she opened her own law practice in Natal Province in 1967, becoming the first woman to do so in that region. Furthermore, she made history as the first Black woman to be appointed as a judge on South Africa's High Court.


Her impressive career includes serving as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, as well as holding a position at the International Criminal Court. From 2008 to 2014, she was the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.


The Nobel Committee, during its announcement in Oslo, recognized Pillay for her unwavering dedication to promoting peace and upholding international law.


The Nobel Peace Prize is considered one of the most esteemed awards globally, and this year marks its 125th anniversary.
