New Delhi: George Kurian, the Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, has officially resigned from his ministerial position following the conclusion of his Rajya Sabha term.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opted not to put his name forward for renomination during the recent Rajya Sabha elections.
The resignation has been accepted by President Droupadi Murmu, as confirmed by the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.
In addition to his role in Minority Affairs, Kurian also served as the Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying.
The President, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has acknowledged Kurian's resignation from the Union Council of Ministers, effective immediately.
Notably, Kurian was one of the few ministers in the Union government representing the Christian community. His term in the Rajya Sabha concluded on June 21.
Alongside Kurian, another Union minister, Ravneet Singh Bittu, was also not renominated for the Rajya Sabha elections held on June 18, marking the end of their tenures.
