Suspects in Hadi's Murder Flee to India

Dhaka: Two key suspects involved in the assassination of Sharif Osman Hadi, a leader of Inquilab Moncho, have reportedly escaped Bangladesh and are thought to be in India, according to a senior officer from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Sunday.

Hadi, aged 32, was shot in the head on December 12 while campaigning in Dhaka. He was subsequently airlifted to Singapore for critical care but succumbed to his injuries on December 18.

The suspects, identified as Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, allegedly crossed into Meghalaya, India, with assistance from local contacts, as stated by Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S N Md Nazrul Islam during a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre.

Islam revealed that the suspects entered India through the Haluaghat border, where they were initially met by a person named Purti. A taxi driver named Sami then took them to Tura city in Meghalaya, as reported by The Daily Star.

The police official did not disclose the exact timing of their escape to India.

As of now, there has been no official response from Indian authorities regarding this situation.

Hadi was a notable youth figure during the mass protests in July-August 2024, which resulted in the ousting of the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina. He was also a candidate for the upcoming elections scheduled for February 12.
